Optimiser/pitstop will look for these they slightly called them different things. But pitstop seemed more robust. You either can modify the pdf or go back to the original files, time permitting.
Have had a similar problem with exported (we needed tagged pdf's not distilled pdf's). Sorry if i don't outline this too well, but we found a number of unresolveable bugs. There was a 75% success rate whatever we tried and that other 15% was buggy as all hell. Print indd > to screen pdf workflow > for a cd. We found that the indd export would subset fonts embedded from illustrator, if already in indd. There were complication related to: was either the version of font, the illustrator used, the way it was saved, the version of illustrator. We ended up resaving each illo and relinking the files and reexporting them (applescripting illustrator CS2).ai 0% pdf compatible/no compression.

We could remove the CID fonts subset but not embed them by creating/loading OTF versions of the same fonts. Neither optimiser/pitstop/pdf enhancer could re-embed a font that was subset. There were significant differences in the files: some.ai legacy text v10,.eps embedded and illustrator CS/CS2. You can embed them by not embedding the fonts as CS2.eps and letting indd do the work, but some files move (some do not). [this is the best way but most laborious] it was too much work to replace/modify them for complicated layered files.
In the end we could remove CID fonts subset (they don't exist as text-literally death's heads on the mac). We could subset/embed otf/type 1 versions for searchable text, but there were so many other complications it's hard to explain here. If you get a workaround please post!!! Because we have currently 7 different print houses to do our jobs and we use the same specification PDF to all of them. We *cannot* have *any* file-related issues with our PDFs, because due to our extremely high volume, we do not press-proof anything.

We are looking into placing customer-supplied PDFs directly into our layouts, and some have come through with CID, but anything we PDF from source files (InD, QXP, Ai etc) won't have CID 'cause we do it right.
Our customers, well, we can't control how they do it (you know how it is). I tried PDF Optimizer on a file and it doesn't even list any fonts able to be unembedded. That's why I think its impossible aside from rasterizing. Abby- I can't understand what you are saying; it seems you don't have a definitive solution either. You need to look at generating your PDFs to an ISO standard (PDF/X) and then with tools available (free) - you can validate if their renderers can cope. The Ghent PDF workgroup ([url]have a suite of tools (so do other organisations) that can check potential problems areas for renderers such as font types, formats, encoding, overprints etc., etc). If their renderers do not pass the tests - they must ensure they are running industry compliant renderers.
You can use this as reasoning whilst talking to the printers. This is the only way to overcome to moving-target syndrome that printers might throw back in your face. It will be impossible to ensure that *no* CID enter your workflow. Hope this helps, Jon.
